magnesium and keppra

Fri, 06/23/2006 - 18:21
I recently was on keppra and I could not tolerate it.I went off of it and 3 weeks later I still wasn't getting any sleep.I figured it was a b6 deficiency so I went out and bought a b6 and magnesium supplement.3 days after taking it I had my first night of natural sleep. Now that I read the magnesium deficiencies on line the symptoms match to a "T".Anyone experience magnesium deficiencies?

My 6 year old son has focal eplilepsy and takes Keppra and vitamin B6. He was recently diagnosed with ADHD-inattention and depression. The depression seems to have been caused by the Keppra. It's heart breaking to see a child this young depressed!

A friend suggested I look into Magnesium. My son can swallow pills, but I was unsuccessful finding Magnesium Citrate in a dosage approprate for kids. Additionally, I learned that because Magnesium is such a bulky vitamin it is often omitted from children's vitamins entirely or there is a scant amount. I found a product called Natural Calm that comes in a powder that you can mix in water or juice. I find the taste pleasant and my son likes it--I give it with a 50/50 water juice combination.

The results?
Overnight noticeable difference in his mood. My child has joy again! I highly recommend it and won't go a day without it. The only caveat is that Magnesium can have a laxative affect, so ease into it gradually and dial it back if stool becomes too soft.

I'm quite shocked that I had to discover this on my own and that no health care provider (we see several: pediatrician, neurologist, and child psychologist) suggested it.

On a side note, after reading on all of the critical roles Magnesium plays in the body my husband started taking it and it has cured his insomnia

My neurologist has me taking Keppra and a low dose of Mg. I have had some side effects (mood swings, weight gain, sleep issues) I’ve talked to him about changing my Rx but he is hesitant.

Well many of our meds decrease our vitamin intake and then cause seizures and all kinds of other problems. I have noticed when I take a bit more of the magnesium that the anxiety and fatigue are not as bad. Anxiety, fatigue and osteopenia has been a problem with me. I had was taking b 6/magnesium/calcium because of the bad stress/anxiety I was having during a party. I stopped my seizures from coming which I always have them when I have big parties. It worked. I could not sleep either, and that all helped. Remember you need calicium/vit d with our magnesium. You cant have one without the other. Omega three has helped alot with my seizures. I got rid of about 234 auras and nine seizures a month every month. Magnesium deficiencies 1) Muscle cramps and spasms 2) Anxiety, nervousness, insomnia 3) Increased blood pressure 4) Blood sugar problems (dysregulation) 5) Depression 6) Fatigue 7) Irregular heart beats, arrhythmias, palpitations 8) Migraines 9) Constipation 10) Osteoporosis 11) Kidney stones Here is some of the foods with magnesium in them: Almonds, some nuts, peanuts and seeds tofu milk chick peas some beans broccoli spinach sweet peas Chestnuts Artichoke best of luck Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/
