Losing my hair from Keppra!!!

Thu, 09/11/2014 - 20:23

I have been on Lamictal for over 2 year with successful seizure control. Then I had a seizure due to my previous neuro's office calling in the wrong dose of Lamotrigine causing the levels to become toxic resulting in severe vertigo and I had 4 seizures in a 2 week period.

Keppra was then added at 1000 mg a day. After seeing a new neuro we decided to try coming off the Keppra since my seizures were controlled for 2 years on Lamictal previously. I had another seizure after coming off the Keppra. Uuggghhh! So....back on the Keppra and my hair is falling out! Has anyone else had this problem? Will I eventually become bald?? Has anyone had success with biotin and other vitamins? What vitamins and how much? Has

anyone had success with another add on med with Lamotrigine that doesn't cause hair loss? Did your hair grow back after coming off Keppra? This is freaking me out! Any help would or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks!

Allie

The thing to do is call your neurologist and talk to him about this issue. I do take keppra and it is the best medication I have ever used. I am older and know that my hair loss is not from keppra. However if it is from keppra I would rather have hair loss or no hair rather then have seizures. It is plain and simple to some of us who are older. I can go without a dr license and no hair then have seizures. Kinda like a person with diabeties not eating certain thing to keep it from going into a different stage.  As for medications and what can happen after someone is taken off it. I do know what can happen after taking dilantin for 30+ years. DIlantin makes your gums fluctuate (going up and down) when you take it. It generally isn't noticed. But it can cause dental problems. I got toxic on it after that long period of time. Once it got out of my system my gums receeded completely meaning they raised and lowered and my teeth were actually falling out. You could see the roots of my teeth. I had dentures made and almost everybody I have been around do not know I have dentures. I sleep in them so my mouth stays in place and you could never know  I have them. My PCP and surgeons didn't knopw I had them.
