Limbic encephalitis

Sun, 09/20/2009 - 11:02

Hi,

my girlfriend has been diagnosed with limbic encephalitis last year. She was admitted 25 DEc 2008 after I found her fitting in the middle of the night. Prior to that, she was having fever. Her fits were not controllable & in 12 hours she fitted more than 10 times. Had to be transferred to a private hospital & she had to be sedated. Unconscious for nearly 2 months & under heavy infusions of 7 types of anti-fits medication. She was given Thiopentone to knock her off.

Later thru checks n tests, she was diagnosed with paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis. She was given 3 courses of IVIg in this 9 mths duration. My girlfriend finally was discharged after 4 mths in hospital.

Her condition now: unable to stand or walk, lost, not talking much, depressed, very sleepy & weak. She has her ups & downs.....at one stage she was progressing very well, improving then went downhill again. Its like a cycle. Her memory is also affected.

I want to understand the side effects of medication better, cos she doesnt say anything , always looks blank though she will always say "i want to sleep". I have read about all her medicines effects & etc but hearing & discussing with support group are always helpful.

She is on Topamax, Keppra, Epilim, Phenytoin, Phenobarbital, carbamazepine. To date: total tablets 30 each day. She was on more tablets before this. She was also on Lorazepam but we had took it off. We are now reducing keppra one tablet a night & will observe how she goes.

So I would appreciate anyone to share with me as I want to help her & understand her situation as she doesnt express it except sleep.

Thank you so much.
