Learning more difficult without Keppra

Wed, 08/16/2017 - 04:42
My daughter was diagnosed with partial complex seizures at age 2 and put on Keppra. This summer after 2 yrs of being seizure free with a now normal EEG she was taken off Keppra. She just started school again, age 14, and is having difficulty concentrating as well as memory and comprehension. Has anyone experienced learning being more difficult when taken off Keppra?

I've heard people

I've heard people occasionally write that keppra has that positive cognitive effect. As a parent I would want to know some extra things... that there is no unusual activity still going on, esp during sleep, and what a current neuropsych eval says about a person's strengths and weaknesses. So I'd ask for an overnight eeg, ambulatory seems like a good potential to catch any concerning activity. Unfortunately there are issues that might remain after seizure activity has subsided or that isn't due to epilepsy in which case a neuropsych eval may be able to identify how to teach a person to cope/shore up any weaknesses.A neuropsych eval doesn't always show what you might expect. They did just come out an say our child's fine motor skills were weak so classes later on that pair art projects with writing will be   difficult for her (and they recommended against that) but they said keep up the piano lessons as that's really good for her (still, she progresses slowly). Memory can be great for someone but organization might be poor so that type of info could point out strategies for coping.

We seem to experience the opposite --that Keppra causes brain fog in our 14 yo daughter. We reduced over the last few months from 3000mg to 2000, and we are hoping that will help as the new school year has just started.
