Lamictal, memory loss and getting memory back

Sun, 12/14/2014 - 23:42

Hi,

I have been on Lamictal 300mg for about 4 years. My loss of memory and inability to pull out words has gotten to the point where I'm not enjoying life. Holding a conversation that lasts a few sentences has become embarassing. I was wondering if anyone who has been on lamictal and taken off has had their memory return. I will talk to my doctor but the last time I went in they tried to convince me that the meds had nothing to do with memory loss.

Thanks,

Donna

I have that same problem.  A year ago I went to this conference for Epilepsy and the main speaker was telling us ways to relax and she was saying all this shit about forgetting my past.  I raised my hand and told her that was not giving me anxiety.  I already can't remember my past.  All of a sudden I started a title wave of people saying how much they could not remember.  Sometimes just words ESPECIALLY NOUNS but also events of their own lives.  In any case what I'm getting at is this is not abnormal for epilepsy whatever med your on.  I asked to go off Topamax for this reason though, and it did help.  I hate describing everything about the word I'm looking for but not getting to the word.  If Lamictal didn't work so well I would try that too.  So go for it, but don't feel suprised if it's just having pulled the short straw in life and coming up with Epilepsy.  P.S. My husbands says him and I would kill it on $100,000 pyramid.  I'm ready to start a new game just for Epileptics.  It would be pretty damn hard to beat an epileptic trying to describe something without using it's name!

I was searching for information about lamictal and memory loss and came across this site and forum. Forgive me for registering and commenting as I do not suffer from Epilepsy or seizures. The best I can come to the table with is cluster headaches and migraine disorder with mild bi-polar depression.  Which I have in the past taken Topamax for. I now take Lamictal for mood stabilization and bi-polar depression and for the reduction of migraine roadsides. It has worked for all of that.  My purpose of posting is that I read so many other comments around the frustration of questioning if what many of the symptoms that you all have in common are the epilepsy and seizures vs a true medication side effect.  I found this blog searching for anyone else having the memory loss, trouble concentrating, organizing even simple thoughts. I have to pre-write out my thoughts before I convey them in my job and personal just so they make sense and I don't forget my entire point mid sentence.  I have trouble pulling the correct words together and conveying a particular point in a conversation even though I had it on the tip of my tongue. It causes anxiety and stress everyday.  Since the Lamictal I have been given another medicine to help with the concentration issue, which then I got two more Rx's to help with the sleeplessness and the anxiety brought on by that. As originally stated I do not suffer from epilepsy, I just wanted to add a token of information that I have the same issues with the lamictal without the seizure variable. I have chosen carefully to discontinue use of the Lamictal over all.    Good luck to every one in this forum as I know that discontinuing Lamictal prescribed for mood stabilization and headaches pales in comparison to taking for such a serious condition as seizures.  Best of luck to everyone.

Like the poster above, just want to offer that I am having similar memory loss and am on Lamictal but not for epilepsy. I just googled the memory loss side effect and found this thread.
