Lamictal increase.

Thu, 08/28/2014 - 14:18

Alright. So for the past couple years I was on 200 mg of lamictal twice a day. Then I found out I was pregnant back in March, and the first neurologist I saw wanted to take me COMPLETELY off lamictal. I said I didn't feel comfortable with that and went to a neurologist my OBGYN recommended. He agreed that coming completely off wasn't a great idea. But he did lower me down to 150 mg twice a day. Everything was great until Sunday. I had a minor 10-20 second seizure and fell off my bed. So I had to go to the dr to make sure baby was okay (he was fine, they think I landed on my side) but to be safe they decided to bring my dosage back up to 200 twice a day since I had been doing so good at that dosage.

My issue and question is: should this be causing me dizziness? I keep getting light headed, but when I was originally on this dosage, I don't recall having that issue. It's not super SEVERE and it's only been a couple days back on this level. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! ☺️

A change in dosage can cause

A change in dosage can cause side effects until your body gets used to that dosage again.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies Lamictal as a Pregnancy Category C medication. This means that the drug has not been fully studied in pregnant women but animal studies suggest that it can cause harm on the unborn fetus.Which is probably why your neurologist wanted to take you off it. Did he tell you which medication he would have you use rather then the lamictal? I do understand your concern and I do know some medications are not good to use while preganat or breast feeding. If it were me or my wife I would be calling my neurologist and ask him questions. If you take me off lanictal what medication would you be putting me on? Why do you want to take me off lamictal? Is lanictal bad while pregnant? Those questions need answers. Like I posted your neurologist may have been trying to watch out for your unborn child and you at the same time. I hope this helps. Use google or bing and type in lamictal and pregnancy to see what you can find out. Joe

Well I was on tops max a few

Well I was on tops max a few years ago, but I was switched to lamictal because it's the safest one to be on while pregnant. & since I was at that age where it was a possibility, my dr wanted me on it. The first dr I saw when I moved to georgia just wanted me completely off. Take nothing else. That's why I found someone different. The new guy agreed to trying to ween off it a little, but didn't feel comfortable with completely. Plus the fact that it's the safest one to be on at the moment. Hopefully the dizziness just goes away.

It could be a side effect

It could be a side effect  which would go away after 2-3 weeks if it is a side effect.  I hope this issue is resolved Let us know how things go and how the baby come out
