Lamictal for children

Tue, 09/02/2014 - 16:08

My 11 yr old daughter has recently been diagnosed with absence seizures. Dr has prescibed her to start on 25mg of Lamotrigine. After reading about the side effects i am really nervous about giving her this drug. Has anyone given it to their child & what were the consequences.

I don't have a child that had epilepsy. I am that person.  I have used lamictal (Lamotrigine) it was doing a good job at stopping some of my seizures aqnd I did taqke it for awhile.  I understand your contern about side effects and they do happen. A question I might ask is have you checked all the medications she takes to see their side effects?? I am also talking about the over the counter meds.. If you look at the side effects on almost all AED's you will see almost the same side effects.  Generally side effects last until the body gets used to the medication which is about 2-3 weeks. Now another questions to ask is would you rather have her try this med and stop the seizures or let her have the seizures?? Generally a neurololgist has patients on medications and that patients seizures were becomming controlled. In those patients he has also see th dosages so he knows what this medication can do because he has another patient using it. Mothers are great and I do love what they do to try and help their kids.  I know that personally since I wouldn't be here if it weren't for my mothers prayer. I hope this helps and she gets the assistance she needs. Please come back and let us know how things are going

My daughter is 3 years old

My daughter is 3 years old and was diagnosed with juvenile myoclonic (sp?) epilepsy when she was 3 months old. She has been taking Lamictal since she was diagnosed and has had no real problems. She has had breakthrough seizures a few times as she has gotten older but they have not been severe and with a very slight change in her dosage everything has been fine.
