Lamictal and vomiting

Mon, 02/27/2006 - 06:41
Just wondering if anyone out there can help me with this query - How long after ingestion does Lamictal take effect ? I just wondered what would happen if the person taking it was ill and vomited just after taking it? My son (15) is currently on 250mg AM/PM of Lamictal and I wondered what would happen if he'd taken it and then for whatever reason vomited. Does anyone know if it would have to stay in his stomach for like 30mins, an hour, longer to still be effective? Sounds like a dumb Question, but I was just curious as sometimes our kids do get sick for non-epilepsy related reasons. (like a stomach wog/virus etc ) Thanks Jo Sedz

Hi Jo, No question you have is a dumb one, we are always learning about our meds. I don't know if this will help, L amictal is absorbed into the blood really quickly . with a small child probably even more so, reaching its highest concentration 1 1/2 hours to 5 hours .

Thanks so much for the reply - so based on your info, if he was to vomit before the hour and a half would he take the dose again or do you think he would have 'some' cover until the evening dose was due? I'm curious as there has been a fairly bad virus going around his high school and it's something I would like to be prepared for. I do have an appt with the neuro in a couple of weeks so I will definitely run it by him when I see him, I just wondered if anyone knew what the procedure was in the meantime. Regards Jo Sedz
