Keppra stopped working - switch to Topamax or ???

Hi everyone,

My 13-year-old had great luck using Keppra for 1 1/2 years, after having some tonic-clonic seziures and being diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy.  However, in the last few months, she's had about 8 seizures, mostly 4am-8am (while sleeping).  Have raised the dose from 2000 to 3250 but not helping.

The neurologist says Topamax is next to try.  Just wondering if anyone has had similar experience.  Seeking opinions on next drug or drug combinations to try...

Thank you!

Kelly

Hi Kelly!  I went through the same thing with my own son two and a half years ago! After a 5-day eeg we were told that his seizures were coming from the occipital lobe and to add Topamax with the Keppra. For him it did work. First off I have to remind you everybody reacts differently to different meds. I will also let you know it was no easy task getting him on the topamax! He had no problems with his morning dose but the nighttime dose would set off leg tremors. He wanted to give it time because the topamax did stop the visual seizures he had  been having. It took us two months of adjusting the dosage but once we did it was worth it. He is now 14 and has been seizure free for two years and recently had a normal eeg! Be sure the doctor makes you aware of side effects! My sons biggest complaint was his memory! Word recall! You also have to drink alot of water because another side effect is kidney infections and they have trouble sweating! I hope this helps just a little! Good luck and I hope and pray your daughter will be seizure free soon!Sandy
