Keppra & Lamictal

Thu, 10/09/2014 - 21:07

Hi, I have had epilepsy since I was 15 years old with grand mal seizures. It was pretty well controlled taking Tegretol until 9 years ago. I was going through a  divorce & my neurologist thought my seizures had a lot to do with stress. I have gone to 2 different neurologists & have been on so many different medicines I can't even list them all. I have had many side effects with all medicines I have been on. I went through the epilepsy monitoring unit  & they discovered I have grand mal & partial seizures. After trying me on several different medicine combos my doctor has me on Keppra 1000mg in the morning & at night along with Lamictal. She started my Lamictal at 100 mg at night slowly increasing it to 300 mg. My seizures have been pretty well contolled. I have had a few partial seizures but my doctor thinks it is probably due to depression. It is very hard for me to concentrate & I get distracted easily. Sometimes when I am at the store I can't even remember my pin# &  also at work I sometimes can't remember how to spell things. I am extremely tired.... when I say extremely I mean there are some days I can't even get out of bed & I take naps all the time. There again my doctor says it is due to my depression but I feel like my depression is pretty well under contol.I was just wondering if anyone else has had these issues. I am getting so frustrated!!!

I'm on the same combo and for

I'm on the same combo and for the same reason (Tegretol quit working for me). I also have chronic depression. Lamictal & keppra made me much LESS tired than Tegretol. It was amazing how much more energy I had! My neurologist told me about some brand new research:  it's very important to keep the depression under control (I take an anti-depressant) as the electricity from seizures actually calms the depression, and the body can "teach" itself that a seizure will relieve depression (kind of like electro-shock therapy).
