Keppra - coming off of meds

Mon, 01/01/2007 - 22:16
I had a one week time frame in July 2006 of which I had multiple seizures Monday and Tuesday, 2 on Thursday, and one on Friday. I was originally on Dilantin and then switched to Keppra of which I have been on Keppra for almost 4 months. Now my Neurologist is thinking that I might be alright if I come off the meds. I want to get pregnant sometime towards the middle or end of this year so we (the Doctors, my husband and I) think it may be better to try coming off the meds sooner then later. My neurologist says everything may have been an allergy to a medicine (I was having migranes, which are now gone) or something else but not technically epilepsy. I had two EEGs, one in the hospital during a seizure, and one in December, of which both came back regular and non epileptic. Anyway, I am in the process of coming off of my Keppra and was just wondering if anyone else has been taken off of this... ? I know you have to come off really slow but I'm a little peranoid and am scared of coming off of it too quickly. Although so far I have not had any problems. I started at 500 twice a day, then 500mg once a day, and am now at 250 once a day. I was just wondering if I should continue to reduce that to 250 every other day or if this is where I should cut it off. I just figured I would ask to see what others have been told. Sorry this is so long and I thank you in advance for your reply!!!

I just recently came off of Keppra but in the hospital. SO they took me off of it within a week time. I did very well doing it so quickly but that is only done in the hospital that way. I always change my meds VERY VERY SLOWLY. You must do it very slowly and follow what your doctor has told you. Best of luck to you. Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/

Hi, Nikki. I did come off

Hi, Nikki. I did come off Keppra. The only thing I really noticed was that I felt a little down for a few days. Not sure why that was, but I usually have a pretty positive outlook, so it must have had something to do with coming off the Keppra. Like you, I worked down slowly - from 2,250 mg. (Seemed to take forever!) At the same time I was starting on Lamictal, working my way up slowly.
