Keppra and insomnia

Mon, 07/03/2006 - 22:35
Hi to all. I have a question about Keppra. Have any of you experienced insomnia while on Keppra? I have difficulty getting to sleep and when I do, I do not sleep soundly. However, I do not feel as foggy headed during the day as I did before starting it (newly diagnosed with complex partials). I am also experiencing the depression associated with Keppra, but have had problems with depression for many years. I am also under a lot of financial stress right now, so I am sure that may also be contributing to the insomnia. I also think I may be entering perimenopause (41 yrs old and had 1 ovary removed 2.5 years ago). Any feedback would be greatlyy appreciated. TLH64

I have JME and I got put on

I have JME and I got put on Keppra 10 days ago because I went from having 1 or 2 events every six months to one per week.  I have not been able to fall asleep before 1am since I started.  Which is unusual for me since I normally am asleep before 11pm.  I don't have a 9-5 kind of job so this isn't the end of the world for me.  But the weird thing is that I have been able to function with only 3 or 4 hours of sleep.  Normally, lack of sleep would cause bad seizures.  To suddenly not have those seizures after 15 years is bizarre for me.  That being said...I am hitting a wall around 3 or 4 every day where I feel doped up.

I take 1000mg of Keppra at night.  Notice that I cannot sleep as much.  Started taking melatonin and sleepy time tea to help me sleep a little more.

This particular problem could be multiple things. If you suffer from depression and take an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, these can be a source of insomnia. I  would say a thorough work up, including thyroid levels and neurology consult. One of the more common causes of insomnia relates to sleep hygiene (ie doing things that like watching TV in bed, caffeine too close to bedtime, etc). The differential causes of insomnia are very broad and difficult to say based on your information. It may be multifactorial (a combination of different problems that result in your problem).
