keppra and behavior problems

Thu, 02/16/2006 - 08:08
Our 10 yr old son is on 1 tsp of keppra 2 X a day. We have been having problems with his behavior and attitude. I am not sure if it is from the meds. Has anyone else had problems like that. He is hard to get up in the morning, and not cooperative. But does not seem sleepy during the day or evening. If it is from the meds will it pass after a certain amount of time?

Is he new to the medication? Sometimes the behavior things settle down after 6 weeks or so. Other times they can keep on. Does he have pretty good seizure control on it? Seizures can also cause behavior issues. Some have tried adding vitamin B 6 to help combat the mood swings associated with Keppra. Our neuro did not think that helps much (we are adding Keppra at the end of the month). sometimes it is just the kid being uncooperative, too. Can you set up a reward system to help really praise him for the good days? A sticker on a chart for the good things, and so many stickers and he can do somehting special or get a small treat (Dollar store type thing)? Worth trying to see if it will help Hang in there Gin

I don't have kids but i am new to keppra myself and yes i don't want to get outta bed it makes me very sleepy. And the first couple weeks i was on it was so much worse. I have had terrible mood swings and deprssion on it. All my friends and my Boyfriend has noticed drastic changes in me. I really dont like this stuff. I was much happier on depakote. Eventually his body will get used to the meds and he wont be so sleepy, as for the moodiness and behavour problems, i am still not used to that part of it. But my sister is fine on it so it depends on the person I guess. If it doesnt get any better after a while talk to the Dr.
