Keppra

Fri, 09/19/2014 - 11:56

Our son has been on Keppra for 6 weeks, starting at 500mgXR and now up to 1000mgXR p.m. and 500mgXR a.m.  His seizures are worse, more frequent, with more myoclonic movement.  He is eating klonopin like candy to try and calm things down. His Dr. says this is not from the keppra but with each increase his seizures have increased.  He has never been this bad.  Dr. wants to add another 500mgXR at p.m. for a total of  2000mgXR per day.  Our son is 140 lbs.

We are very worried as he is missing school due to this, He is 19.  Has anyone had this happen.  I think it is time to back out of this med.

WelcomeA question to ask

WelcomeA question to ask would be Why is he taking the klonopin?? It is used for depression and other things also. Is your son being taken off one medication and moved over to keppra? As for his dosage increases. It takes time for the body to get used to the meds and time to get used to the dosage increases. The dosage the doctor wants him to take is mid level for a person. I take the highest dosage which is 4500 mg a day 3-750mg morning and night.  Also understand the doctor is trying to get the  meds at a level your son can take and the dosages will need to be taken 12 hours apart. & am and 7 pm. If taken at 7am and 10 pm the hours between 7&10 pm will be lower levels and there is also a possiability of  break thru seizures. As for keppra.... I have been living and dealing with epilepsy for 50+ years and keppra is the best medication I have ever used. It not only reduced the number of seizures I was having it also shortened the time in those seizures and time to get back to normal. The simpal partial seizures I was having used to last 2-8 minutess and the time to get back to normal was 15-45 minutes.(I could functions and knew where I was it just took more time to completely do the jobs I worked if and when I had one at work). Those same seizures are now 2-10 seconds long and the time to focus is 8-15 seconds. I could have one while talking to you and you would no nothing of it unless you knew what to look at or for.  Have you told your sons neurologist he takes klonopin? If not then please do. A person can have seizures from medications made to stop seizures and if his neurologist does not know about the klonopin the combination could the the problem. I do hope he gets his meds set right and he gets seizure free, Please do come back and let us know how things are going. Joe
