Is it safe to go to the beach when you are anti-seizure meds?

Fri, 08/12/2005 - 13:09

Alot of you know Hubby is on two different meds right now (Dilantin and Lamictal) and in the middle of going off Dilantin and going onto Lamictal. He wants to go to the shore and spend time alone with me since our 4 kids are away. Im too afraid that the sunshine adn all the meds he is on will make him sick. Can this happen?

Anyone that goes swimming should have someone with them.He could have a seizure just like anyother time.Just keep a closer watch on him especially when he's in the water or if he's laying out in the sun.I doubt the sunshine will make him sick though anything is possible though;just keep a close look on his seizures. I have been on both and limited my time in sun as I got older. I have blues that are especially sensitive to the sun anyway; but I know if

I mess up timing of pills I get double vision.  Glare bothers me from snow-both blue eyes and I "BELIEVE" meds.  I now take lamictal and

watch out for sun and also am sure to keep food in stomach and now have learned 5-7 meals daily is much better.

Good luch! Adam

Back in the good ol' days, patients who had had heart attacks were told not to have sex, exercise, etc., and everyone lead timid frightened lives as a result. Your husband is on medication, right! He's taking therapeutic dosages of the medication that he's been prescribed, right! Then have him put a shirt on along with light cotton slacks, wear a sunhat and glasses. Any exposed skin should have lots of sunprotection cream slathered on and all you should concern yourself with is that his blood tests are done on a timely basis and that he takes his medication on time.My husband has Status Epilepticus. If he has a seizure, he has to be attended to in ER within 15 minutes of onset, or he dies. The way we look at it....he can remain a prisoner at home with us all waiting for the next seizure. Or, we can accept that one day I might get hit by a bus waiting for a seizure to happen to him. He's over 21 and under 100, so I work and leave him to his life at home doing what he needs/wants to do. When we have time off we travel, go shopping, party with our friends....basically live our lives around his condition.....and you should too!Good luck and go to the beach. Do it! Life's too short as it is ... be brave, enjoy yourselves. Or, both of you regret it later when you look back and realize you had the chance to have fun.
