Has Depakote helped anyone in a positive way?

Mon, 05/30/2005 - 21:12
I am new here and I have been reading tons of stuff about depakote and its side affects and I am saying in my head "holy crap, that was EXACTLY what happened to me!" you know, like major weight gain, major hair loss, I would get horrible head aches, bad heart burn, I would get sick all of the time, and it was just horrible. Now I am on 300mg of lamictal (for JME) and it has been way better!

Hi Aly_m!  My daughter  took depakote and she had the hair loss but no weight gain.  She did ok with it though til her "specialist" decided to max her out on it.  She started throwing up couldnt get off the couch, so i called the dr and he had her levels done the next morning...they were WAY up there.  Im glad i called him because i think if i had given her any more of it, it may have really messed her up or killed her.  That was scary.  She will NEVER go on depakote again.  It has kept her in a fog, and now the dr is decreasing her dose and put her on keppra and shes on lamictal also.  Dont ya just hate those side effects? Glad to hear the lamictal is working for you!

Since the summer I was /have been on Keppra and lamactal Friday I started taking lyrica with it. I was on depokote for many many years it was the best drug ever! Now I am off that and on the other I have had more dizzy spells than ever.

My son had an allergic reaction to lamictal.  So he started on Depakote ER about two weeks ago.  He is 10 years old and is taking 1000 mg a day.  So far so good.  He has had a little nausea in the am and pm but nothing he can't handle.  So Iam hopeful this will work for him.  Everyone reacts differently, if anything he seems a little more energized rather than any drowsiness.  He has always had a great appetite so it is hard to say whether that had increased.  I hope you AED will work for you. Best of luck .
