Getting much worse on Keppra

Wed, 08/09/2006 - 21:40
I started Keppra on 5/31. At first, it seemed to be working well (with my carbatrol). My doctor wanted me off the carbatrol. My seizures were increasing in number, but seemed to be getting better in severity. After completely cutting out the carbatrol, I had a very bad month. I had several grand mal seizures. In two of these seizures I started out at one place and walked to completely different destinations. Once I left work (unnoticed) and walked down the street to another retail store, the other time, I left my house (in my pajamas and barefeet) and went to work to try and work a shift I wasn't scheduled to work. The second time I almost punched my son out trying to leave because he tried to stop me. I remember none of this. There were more seizures that happened in addition to these, but I don't remember enough details to write them down. My doctor now has me back on the carbatrol and the grand mals seem to have stopped.....for now. I'm not sure what will happen after my menstrual cycle this month, but I'll keep you posted. I'm finally starting to get my strength back. It was virtually gone after the grand mals. A friend told me the left side of my face is starting to droop down (kind of like what happens to stroke victims) and I look tired all the time....even though I'm getting enough rest. I also keep finding bruises on different parts of my body, although I don't remember how I may have gotten them. I don't know what changes my doctor may have for me now, but if anyone has any ideas....let me know. If anyone knows of any success stories with regulating levels of estrogen and/or progesterone, let me know. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers. I know I could use that. Thanks for listening!! Peggy

Hi Peggy, My son was started on keppra last March, after starting on this med he started to get worse,i.e,he was having more seizures,he suffered from inbalance ,his speech became slurred and his eyesight started to deteriorate.Everytime i called the dr she told me to up his med by another 5oomgs until he was taking just under 3,000mgs a day.I then found out that one of the side effects of keppra was thoughts of suicide,my son had been saying the most horrible things about wanting to kill himself. When i informed the dr of this she told me to start taking him of it right away which we did very gradually,he was also taking clobazam at this time.My son was then diagnosed with progressive myoclonic epilepsy in November, the docs are saying that the future doesn't look too good for him,he is now in a wheelchair and has myoclonic jerks most of the time and he now attends a special school.I blame the keppra for this as he wasn't as bad until he started on this drug. The docs say no but i have my doubts. Thinking of you and hope you get a medication that suits you. Fiona

My 8 y.o. daughter also got MUCH worse on Keppra. Increase in seizures, eye pain, extreme sensitivity to light (we couldn't have lights on in the house and she would wear sunglasses), MANY MANY auras, and dizziness. She basically could not function on it. Our doctor also would increase the dosage, thinking that was the problem, but each time she would get worse. The doctor finally took her off, and within 2 days she was much better. I felt like I had my daughter back again. Lori
