Fycompa - Side effects as compared to Keppra

Thu, 06/02/2016 - 07:06
Hello all, My wife's neurologist recently indicated that a relatively new drug, Fycompa has been approved for the treatment of generalized epilepsy. He explained that the drug works much the same way as Keppra, however, the drug is much stronger than Keppra. My wife had tried Keppra a few years back and had luck with it initially, but eventually (after about 2 years) built up a tolerance to it. Despite that, we are considering giving Vycompa a try. We are concerned, however, that since it is a stronger drug, the side effects will also be amplified. Can anyone who is/has been on Vycompa confirm or debunk this? I'd especially like to hear from someone who has been on both Keppra and Vycompa. Thanks in advance!

WEll I have never been on vycompa so I can't speak much for it. I have been on Keppra and still use it. It works well.I can also try to get you to understand a little about drugs and side effects and some on testing. My Doc was one of the neurologists in the Epilepsy Group in dallas that have been working on the testing done for all the different drugs in those studies. Each medication is created for certain types of seizures. Once approved for use th testing doesn't stop. Vycompa was approved for use 10-2012 maybe for a different type of seizure. But like I was posting the testing doesn't stop. it is then tested for other types of seizures. Once that is founf out the testing then is expanded to see which medications it can work with to control seizures for some people. If a drug is stronger what is it stronger on? You see pain relievers are stronger but their side effects stay the same or in some cases they have fewer side effects. You see the last part of that sentence is something you need to know. Seizure medications are being created to control seizures with FEWER SIDE EFFECTS. Just because you think a stronger medication does not mean the side effect will be amplified.I hop[e this helps and she gets her seizures under controlJoe
