Finding a Solution?

I'm new to the forum so first I want to say hello to everyone and introduce myself briefly. My name is Tyler, I'm 20 and I have been having temporal lobe seizures (complex partial) for about 6 years but wasn't finally diagnosed until 2 years ago. I have been on topriamate (for headaches before I was diagnosed), ethosuximide, and currently carbamazepine. So far none of them have worked, they have slightly seemed to slow them but nothing worth noting really. My question is about what is the likely hood that it's drug resistant and requires other methods of treatment? Also, is it possible for TLE to turn into grand mal seizures? Also if you have any experiences you'd like to share, please feel free to leave them in the comments. :) Thanks, Tyler

Hi Tyler,  I also have

Hi Tyler,  I also have temporal lobe epilepsy and I have both absence and complex partial sz.  I've had E. for 44 yrs. now and I tried over 10 different sz. meds then my Dr. did a DNA test on me and found out I was drug resistant to all sz. meds out on the market right now.  Ask your Dr. to do a DNA test all they have to do is take some blood and wipe the inside of your mouth with a q-tip this is sent to the lab and they can see all the enzymes in your liver along with seeing your body chemistry and from that they can tell if you are drug resistant or they can find the best sz. med for you with the least side effect.  One thing I started to do is taking vitamin B12 1000 mcg. once a day and that greatly reduced my sz.  Cut back on the carbs and starch foods and stay away from anything with NutraSweet because this can trigger sz. for many people. I wish you the best of luck and May God Bless You!  Sue

If you have had some success

If you have had some success at reducing the number of seizures then that medication is helping. It takes work to get the medications and dosages set right. Meaning trial and error several times. A medication I take with keppra is vimpat. The combination together has not only reduced the number of seizures it has shortened the time in those seizures. Seizures that were 5-8 minutes long are now 2-8 seconds long. The recovery time used to be 15-48 minutes and at times longer is now 2-8 seconds long and if The seizure clusters at times 5 minutes. I can have most of my seizures and you wouldn't know about them. If you like your neurologist then work with him and ask questions about the medications and seizure count. "Is this the best medication for my seizures" What is the best medication to couple with it to help control my seizures better. Asking questions lets them know you want results and asking about the possible side effects does make him look at other medications and procedures.

How bad are your seizures? If

How bad are your seizures? If this med is helping now it will help you in the future too. If you stop them the result will be grande-mals.
