Felbatol: Generic vs Brand

Thu, 08/25/2016 - 12:23
Hello! I am new to this community, but not new to epilepsy. My daughter began (or we realized!) having seizures around 2007. Since then she has tried 7 different meds to get them under control. Med #7 was Felbatol, her miracle drug! Knowing how touchy insurance is about getting the generic, I asked that it be filled that way. However...this was back in 2012 and her state insurance (she is disabled) did not cover the generic version then so she started on the brand. All went well! She was actually able to wean off Depakote finally last year and now is only on Felbatol for seizures. Life is good...until Jan 2016 when we went to get the first refill of the year and were told that NOW the state requires generic! Well, I got on the phone and got it straightened out that she can stay on the brand version. I am sure this issue will rear its ugly head again though and am wondering if anyone else out there has switched from brand to generic for this drug and what your results were from that. I have a strong fear of losing her seizure control. She had terrible drop seizures that were never controlled until the felbatol in addition to "grand mal" ones that were less regular, but haven't been seen since beginning felbatol. I am loving the quality of life felbatol gives her. She has other medical issues going on due to prematurity (she is 15 now) so it is nice to be able to focus on those and not fighting seizures anymore. I do not wish to return to the way life was before she had her seizures controlled! Thanks! busymom :)

OK so she has used generic

OK so she has used generic meds and brand name. She has used bot and isdoing goodOK just so you'll know it you need to talk to your pharmicists also.. everyting there are changes with medications which is when regulations are written into state and federal laws and regulations. MEdiciaid has them and Obamaccare added to them and medicare also get affected. In most times and states the pharmacies are to give generics instead of name brand. It saves the medicaid and medicare money which can then be applied to other things needed. Now yo also need to be watching her because changes in hormpnes can and have afected medications.
