Epilepsy & Depressent Medication

Thu, 12/28/2006 - 10:05
I believe I read somewhere that Anti D medication should not be used in people with E. My son's Psychaitrist wants to start him on Ant D medication but wasnt sure about the impact it would have on seizures... (another so called specialist that wants me to do the research) Son currently takes 1200mgs of Tegretol. Thanks

My epi said that all anti-depressants increase risk of seizures, about 1-2% chance. One is a 5% risk...I can't remember the name of it, sorry! So, that one was off-limits. I was put on Celexa. Best of luck to you and your son! Heather

I'm tempted to look this up in my mom's nurse's pill guide so we have more information. I do know that several people I know do not have E but are prescribed a combination of Depakote (as well as a couple different AED's) and anti-depressant drugs for Bipolar Disorder. I do know that several AED's are used for symptoms of BD as well as for E. Now I'm really curious. Susan
