YES I was on Dilantin for quite sometime, now I'm on Topomax anyway as I know the side effects are the unusual hair growth and the irritated gums. That when you go to the dentist you have to get them cut all the time. Also It makes you off balance everytime you walk you feel as if you're out of it or you're drunk. And constantly falling. And even if you are off this drug the side effects remains with you I if you have been on this drug for a long time. So you will constantly grow hair on your body and have bleeding gums everytime you brush I was on 100mgs 2.

I took dilantin for 20 yrs. I started when I was 10 yrs old and switched to lamictal when i was 30. My dosage was low when i was young but by the time i was 18 i was taking 350mg a day. The side effects that I had were swollen gums (braces made it worse), confusion, unusual hair growth, a little off balance, hand would shake and nerve damage. I was taken off of dilantin because nerve damage is a long term side effect of dilantin. So once I switched to lamictal all of my nerves healed, gum swelling went away, balance is good, hand doesnt shake, but the unusual hair growth has remained. The reason why I came to this forum is that I'm wondering if dilantin damages your prostate gland. When i was 26 i came down with prostatitis. None of the dr.'s know what causes prostatitis but when i switched to lamictal it mostly went away. I still have a flare up here and there. I'm wondering if any other guys who are on/took dilantin have any prostate conditions?

Hi. I've been doing 400 to 500mg daily of Dilantin/Phenytoin since 1990 and have had no loss of sex drive. My wife would probably appreciate that side effect, I'm sure. But I have questions about side effects - can anyone shed light on bone loss or liver damage associated with long term Dilantin use? Do the alternatives have side effects that are just as bad - long term?
