Dilantin: major mood swings!!!!

Sat, 04/15/2006 - 14:58
Hello all, I was wondering what the deal is with Dilantin and mood swings??? I have been on Dilantin for 6 months now and I still get mild seizures and my mood swings are astronomical! One minute all is great and the next I am so depressed! I hate the way I feel and want to know if this is normal? Also, are there any foods or vitamins that can help to lessen the depression until I can ween myself off the drugs??

Had seizures as a kid and recently about 5 months ago started having seizures again I am now 42 went to the emergency room for my first seizure and they started me on 500mg of Keppra twice a day after 2 months of taking that finally seen my PCP he set me up with a neurologist and without CT scans or anything he put me on dilantin after I told him that's what I was on when I was younger.I was taking 500 mg of Keppra in the a.m and 300 mg at night went for labs and was called a month later saying i need to up my dose so now I take 500 mg of Keppra and 130 mg of dilantin in the a.m and 300 mg of dilantin at night...Seizures has stopped but I'm always tired, very moody, and nauseated with loose stools..Loose stools in the a.m. only...Scared and don't know what to do I only seen my neurologist once in April I see him again in July I find that weird also because I'm a new patient.

KARDSHARQUE I have been taking Dilantin for over thirty years. I have suffered from major mood swings to the point where I have pushed everybody away and am lucky to still have my family and job. I only recall the nastiness starting seven to ten years ago. I've been on numerous meds in that time and now take Dilantin Keppra and Lamictal. I thought the mood swings were related to being toxic or maybe mixing new meds. I now wonder if it was the Dilantin all along.
