Dilantin, Lamictal and Gum Overgrowth/Moving Teeth

Fri, 08/04/2017 - 21:50
I have gingival hyperplasia or extensive gum overgrowth due to Dilantin. I Would like to do invisalign or clear correct but it may not be possible with the gum growth. Does anyone have this problem with their gums? L Has anyone with these gum issues done invisalign?

Invisalign and ClearCorrect use plastic aligners in the shape of your teeth in order to straighten teeth.  They must be worn 21-22 hours a day and can only be removed for eating and brushing.  The aligners can aggravate the gums in certain situations.   Does anyone else have inflamed gums from meds and has anyone else tried these procedures?

It's a Catch 22.  The meds

It's a Catch 22.  The meds cause the gum overgrowth which causes teeth to move.  The teeth are now more crooked and more difficult to clean so the plaque is hard to remove and it is easier for gums to get infected by the plaque.  Straightened teeth are ideal if aligners can work.  However the aligners may cause increased bacteria build up with someone with gum problems.  That's  the rub.
