Changing Meds - Need Help

Wed, 01/03/2007 - 13:02
I am currently taking 500mg of Keppra twice a day, and increasing my dose gradually of Lamictal. The end result should be 150mg of Lamictal in AM and 300mg of Lamictal in PM. I am to wean myself off of the Keppra. How quickly should I do this. I know you can't just come off of it quickly, but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on this? Any help is always appreciated.

Hi There, My son is in the exact same process as you! He is slowly increasing his Lamictal, and then will be weaned off the Keppra. From what I have read there may be break through seizures when you wean off the Keppra at first. I suggest you have your neurologist write out your increase (lamictal) and decrease (keppra) schedule for you so you are not in the dark. Right now we have the increase schedule of Lamictal right down to the day written out so we are all on the same page. The neurologist will then give us our sheet with the dates to decrease the Keppra when he is at the full dose of Lamictal so we can all monitor closly. I hope that you have a good dilogue with your neurologist so that he/she can give you this guidance. I was just wondering, how are your moods with the Keppra? My son is pretty irritable on it. It seems that the Keppra is helping reduce the seizures, but he can be quite quick to fly off the handle! The nuerologist feels he will be best served when he is on a full dose of Lamictal only. Good luck, and let me know how it goes. tresa (mama bear) tresagibson@hotmail.com www.tresagibson.ca

I HAVE BEEN TAKIGN TEGRETOL FOR ABOUT 16 YRS AND LAMICATL WAS ADDED TO THE MIX ABOUT 6 YEARS AGO. NOW MY EPILEPTOLOGIST HAS STARTED ME ON KEPPRA, WITH THE PLAN TO SLOWLY WEEN ME OFF OF TEGRETOL COMPLETELY, WHICH I AM THANKING GOD FOR BECUZ MY GOSH ALL OF THE SIDE EFFECTS WERE JUST TO MUCH. I HAVE NOTICED THAT SINCE I STARTED TAKING KEPPRA I AM VERY SHORT TEMPERED AND EXTREMELY DEPRESSED OFTEN. IN RESPONSE TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER, YOU SHOULD FOLLOW YOUR NEUROLOGIST ORDERS AS FAR AS HOW TO GO ABOUT WEENIG YOURSELF OFF OF A DRUG. I WOULDN'T GO WITH WHAT SOMEONE ELSE SAYS. EVERYONE'S BODY DOESN'T REACT THE SAME WAY TO ANY SAME DRUG, JMO. GOOD LUCK AND I HOPE EVERYTHING GOES WELL WITH AND FOR YOU...

I appreciate the suggestions. My neuro has advised me to back down by 1/2 a pill per week. I am really bummed because my neuro is taking a full time position at a local hospital and I will be changing docs. to another one in his practice. My neuro has epilepsy, so he definitely understood my questions and concerns. Thank you for the suggestions. I have not had any mood side effects with the Keppra. My only problem was that I felt like I was in a fog most of the time. I just felt so doped up that I didn't care. The lamictal seems to be doing good, but it makes me want to fidget all of the time. I can hardly sit still. But, still is better than going thru life in a fog. This website has helped me tremendously. It is good to know that I am not the only one going thru this, and there are other people that understand and are going thru the same things. Sometimes I don't think people understand fully unless they are experiencing it, too. I just wanted to say thanks to all of the supportive people out there.
