change in seizures? or is it seizures at all?

Thu, 11/09/2006 - 19:44
recently i started having small spells of what i compare to vibrations/electric charges run through my head, they are quick and leave the room slightly spinning and my eyes disoriented. they are quick, come on without warning and remind me of someone putting something vibrating to the side of my head. are these seizures? I have had TLE all my life (complex partials). I took tegretol for a long time before finally switching over to Topamax a few years ago. My seizures are so infrequent that I am able to take 25 mg. a day and get by. at first that was just because I couldn't afford the medication but now I am in a good drug program where I can get the medication for free which helps tremendously so I could go up if needed. but the 25 mg. works, although I do have breakthrough seizures every once in a while, they are rare and so small that I can function right through them so I don't mind them. I would rather have the infrequent ones than be in a brain fog all the time. My concern is that this new feeling is some new complexity to my seizures and something that should be addressed by the doctor. so far I have only had one a few weeks ago, one yesterday and a very small spell today. has anyone else ever had this type feeling and are they seizures? we are uninsured so my doctor is a general physician, i don't attend a neurosurgeon because of the costs so anyone that can give me advice, it's greatly appreciated. thanks for all the help! elicia

I have had similar feelings, although I don't know if it's seizures or not. I have had what feels like an electric current run through my head and it messes up my vision until my head stops buzzing. I told my doctor about it and other problems I've been having today and she looked at me like I was nuts. She did decide to send me to a neurologist though. I wish I could help you out more, but I don't know for sure what causes it. Just thought I'd let you know that you aren't alone with that feeling because I've had it too. You should probably talk to your doctor about it and get more information. Kate Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. thanks for the reply! I am just concerned that perhaps it is a different kind of seizure and maybe my medicine needs adjusting. It took me years to figure out that I was even having seizures. To describe to a doctor the feeling you have when you have one of these "spells", I just knew he would look at me and think I was nuts! So I thought this time I would ask around and just see if anyone else might have this same kind of feeling. this latest "electrical" feeling is something new to me. and so far it's very infrequent. If it becomes more frequent I will definitely talk to the doctor and perhaps up my dose of medicine. I just hate to take any more than I have to when it comes to medications. THANKS AGAIN! all your help is greatly appreciated!

You're welcome :) I hope they remain infrequent for you. I find them really annoying myself. And hey, it looks like we're in the same boat with our doctors looking at us like we're nuts :P Anyways, I hope that it all works out for you and that whatever it is, seizure or not, goes away without you needing more medicine. I don't take any medicine but the idea of it kind of scares me so I understand you not wanting to take more than necessary.
