Carbamazepine/Tegretol long term effects. Please help!

Sun, 06/07/2015 - 06:21

Hello all!
This is my first time on the forums, and im so thankful to have found them! I am currently doing a little bit of my own research trying to piece together a few things and figured I may be able to find someone here with some knowledge!

I was diagnosed with Epilepsy- Complex Partial seizures at 3 years old after multiple EEG and MRI.

I was under regular care of a Neuroglogist and was medicated with liquid Tegretol/ Carbamazepine until I was 7 or 8 years old.

Eventually the seizures stopped and I was taken off Tegretol, and ceased treatment with my Neurologist. Thankfully I have been seizure free for 21 years now.

Epilepsy is something that has come up again for me right now, as I have been diagnosed with a neuroloigcal disorder and have had to provide lots of information to my specialists about my medical history. Particularly because I am no longer in contact with my Pediatric Neurlogist- I haven't had access to anybody with knowledge of Epilepsy, or been kept up to speed with the latest information.

I was doing some of my own research recently, trying to find information on excessive bruising that I have been suffering from for a long time.
I stumbled across a page discussing Thrombocytopenia which manifests as increased bruising, increased bleeding with cuts or injuries among other things.
It triggers increased platelet destruction.
This can be caused by medications that lower platelet count by causing immunologic reaction against platelets, which is called drug induced thrombocytopenia. Carbamazepine (Tegretol) is the very first medication mentioned. This is the first time that I have ever come across Tegretol listed as the possible cause of a condition.
It got me wondering, are there any other long term effects of Tegretol usage?
Is there anyone else out there who was on it for a short time, and has unfolding health conditions or concerns that they attribute to their Tegretol usage?
There is information relating to effects whilst being on Tegretol but I cant seem to find much information about long term health.

Any information on your own experience would be very helpful :)
