Can Absence Seizures be triggered by tiredness

Fri, 01/16/2015 - 08:26

Hi,

My 4,5 year old seem to have the symptoms of absence seizure but only when he gets over tired. (Weeks of bad sleep at night when his sleep schedule gets interrupted due to travel to different time zone or vacationing).

I have a doctors appointment scheduled for him, but I would like to ask this community too if Absence seizures can be triggered/ caused by sleep deprivation and occure only when the child is sleep deprived?

Thank you in advance,

M.

I would suggest you go to triggers in the learn section. Yes lack of sleep can trigger seizures of any kind be they absence or tonic clonic. Stress is another trigger. As far as absence seizures only happening when he is sleep deprived? No if he has absence seizures they can happen when he is healthy and well rested too. If you see him day dreaming that day dream may be a seizure. I had been being written up in class for day dreaming. when in reality those day dreans were petite mal seizures (AKA absence seizures) I hope this helps and he gets the assistance he needs Joe

Thank you for your answers,

Thank you for your answers, @amy jo, I really only see them when he's tired after a longer period of bad sleep. Other than that I only see him daydream (in a different way, more like focused thinking of something) when he is eating. He is usually really quiet while eating and is focused somewhere else, but it does not look weird. I will keep an open eye and am looking forward to all further input as well as our upcoming dr's app. Thanks again!
