Best seizure meds? Anyone on vimpat and/or depakote?

Mon, 05/29/2017 - 15:41
My brother has been on depakote since he was 9 after having his first seizure. He is now 31. His dep dosage has been changed many times over the years & we found out the hard way that generic meds do not work as well if at all. Vimpat was just added to his med intake in January. It makes him sick, blurred & double vision & he's averaging 3 seizures a month every 6-7 days like clockwork. Is anyone having better luck with other medications?

Hi, I began having seizures

Hi, I began having seizures last fall - & was hospitalized for several days, as they ruled out the worst possible causes.    I was put on Vimpat over Kappra b/c  fewer side effects are reported. I now take Vimpat at night, and more time has passed.  The side effects are more manageable than they were the first few months. (I lost a lot of memory from the first 90 days & still find some short term memory & concentration issues.)  Though of course  I hope the effects will still lessen or that I can wean off all meds in another year,  like I said, it's better than it was just months ago.Vimpat's cost--- my insurance SO FAR, (crossing myself and my fingers as I say that), has covered it.  I was told by my neurologist that b/c he began the Vimpat prescription while I was admitted and IN the hospital, it was more likely to be covered as a "continuing" medication. So maybe if you get re-admitted for something, that's a consideration?  Yes I'm grateful it's covered. Also there is a generic out there now. Good luck.
