adderall and seizures

Thu, 03/31/2011 - 21:57

I recently/reluctantly put my daughter on ADHD medicine adderall due to her having problems with attention and staying in her seat, listening, so on and so on.

Before that she had not had any seizures that I was aware of for two years, except for one back in Jan. of this year. She started on adderall on March 6. Her behavior did improve but last Sunday, March 27 she had a seizure upon falling asleep. I called her neurologist who said to increase her carbartol to 2 pills twice per day. She is also taking lamictal twice per day. She just had another one, not as long but a seizure nonetheless. I feel that the adderal is causing this increase in seizures.

Has anybody else experienced an increase in seizures while on adderal and can anyone recommend any ADHD meds that do not increase seizures?

Thanks

Many of the central nervous system stimulants - alerting agents - used to treat ADHD (examples: coffee, caffeine compounds, Ritalin, Dexedrine, Adderall and so on) are known to lower the seizure threshold for some of those with epilepsy. The weakest stimulant of the group is the old medicine, coffee/caffeine compounds. That's my understanding.

I was on adderall for over 5 years. I'm currently 32. I had a seizure one time at the age of 18 months. The doctor had no idea what caused it at that time. This past Sunday, the lights went out. I woke up with EMS around, and my wife and kids crying. I went to the hospital and was immediately told to discontinue taking the adderall. I was having partial seizures where I would not black out about a year after starting adderall. I had no idea they were partial seizures at the time. I would get deja-vu and get sweaty, this would last about 10 seconds. My suggestion is to weigh your options and talk with your Dr.

Yes, my son was diagnosed

Yes, my son was diagnosed with absence epilepsy and it was being controlled successfully with medication. However, he was also struggling with ADHD and after about a month of taking Adderall he began having grand mal seizures. I personally took adderall for a while and I developed a tic... It feels neurological, like a part of my brain now miss fires. I'm convinced that there is a connection between the brain and the nervous system and adderall and that seizures are mixed in somehow.
