Uncontrollable Eye Movements

Tue, 08/24/2010 - 10:06

My sister is 11 years old, and was only recently diagnosed w/Epilesy about 4 months ago.

She experiences tonic-clonic seizure monthly, but only recently, about 3-4 days ago, after her seizure she had uncontrollable eye movements, which is normal for her when she's just coming out from her seizure.

What has me concerned is that the next day, over 24 hours later she was still experiencing uncontrollable eye movements, which has never happened before.

 Is this normal?

My son Addi has 4 different kinds of seizures. So it could be a different kind of seizure. I would do research or ask her doctor the next time she has and appointment. On this site it states that there are 41 different types. Yeah, it seems overwelming! But they are discibed very plainly so you know what you are looking for.

One thing I would check into is the possibility of your sister having a condition which causes the cerebellum to swell chronically. When the cerebellum swells up, it usually expands downward and applies pressure to the spinal cord which may cause this to happen. If it is the cerebellum, they will be able to catch it on an MRI if it is caught in time or if she's had it happen before and scar tissue has formed from previous incidents where the cerebellum was inflamed. She may then have to have an intensive surgery if that is the case. Although this is rare, it is still a possibility since we've had it happen twice in our hospital here in East Texas. That's the one possibility that jumps to my mind and the neurologists I work with based on what you mentioned. Hope we helped.
