Trileptal vs Keppra

Fri, 10/10/2014 - 13:01

Hi all,

I am new to the group. My son was just diangosed with Epilepsy in Sept. His Epilespy is a direct result of a stroke he survived at birth.

He has been on Trileptal for 4 weeks. The anger that is pouring out of him is awful. We have had 3 complaints from his school and soccer coach. I am talking with his doctors about Keppra.  Is Anger a component to all seizure meds?

Thanks,
Ashley

There are many side effects

There are many side effects with all seizure medications. Keppra is becomming the go to medication for epilepsy. When they started using it it had people who got side effects and one of then was mood changes. People posted about their issues with it. That said I have been using it for many years (about 15) keppra not only reduced the number of seizures I was having it also shortened the time in those seizures. I can say it has been the best seizure medication I have been on in the 50+ years I have been living and dealing with epilepsy.I have been in drug studies and do know how those side effects get put on the list. I also know that 5-8% of the people taking it have side effects. If you read posts from people who have had bad experiances with it you can come up with many. You will see little if any posts comming from the other 92-95% of the people who are happy using it

I take Trileptal (300 in the morning; 450 at night), and I can say that I've never had any behavioral changes. I HAVE had the "Keppra rage" when I was on it, which is why I immediately switched. I'm also on Clonzepam (1mg in the morning; a TINY dose) and I've also been on Topamax for 10 years. Clonazepam can cause "anger issues" also, so my neurologist put me on B6 vitamins. Those can help. Talk to your doctor! See what he says!

They should order regular

They should order regular checks of the metabolites, sodium, et alia. We did them every three months or so for the first year+. Now that our daughter has stayed at the same dosage or trileptal for over six months the testing is less often. Also don't fuss about sodium intake but it isn't like she eats a lot of anything so something with excess salt is never a lot for her, another drug has reduced her appetite quite a bit.
