Trileptal

Fri, 03/23/2007 - 12:55
My son is 4 years old. He has had a routine and video EEG which show him having spikes which could indicate seizure potential. He is a former 30-week preemie who had a mild brain bleed, and is diagnosed with mild-high functioning PDD-NOS. His nurologist prescribed Trilpetal because although he has not had any full blown seizures, he has a lot of trouble with focusing and she feels these spikes are one of the main issues why is speech is delayed. She believes this med will really help him. Does anyone have any experience with Trileptal with a child this young? I am especially curious if anyone has had negative side effects from the drug does it subside if meds stopped or more long lasting. My husband is petrified to give medication. Any thoughts/experiences are appreciated?

I dont him for feeling that way about meds but sometimes you just have to go on them. I just got off of trileptal in the past few months. I have been on them for the past I guess four years or so. You know I like trileptal alot. It gave me no other problems, except this one big problem one for me. http://www.epilepsy.com/medications/b_trileptal_side.html http://www.epilepsy.com/medications/b_trileptal_serious.html In some people this med can cause Hyponatremia(low sodium)which was me. If it gets too low it will cause a generalized seizure. I had only complex partial seizures and I had generalize ones about every 4 or 5 months when the sodium went low. But I would start to get auras and then I would drink gatorade for a few days. But you could eat olives or things that are saltly. I kept gatorade in the house all the time. But I decided I dealt enough with this problem and I got off. But remember everyone is different and it may not even affect your son. I want to wish him well take care Lisa http://www.sleep-safe.co.uk/id90.htm http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/EpilepsyApproach1/

My daughter started having

My daughter started having seizures last year in September. She was only 4 at the time. It was her first one ever and I was pregnant at the time. At first the doctor put her on Trileptal. After about 1&1/2 weeks she broke out in a rash. They had to change her medication to Keppra instead. Other than that we have not had any other problems with Trileptal. Good luck.

Thank you for your comment. Would you mind telling me about the rash? was it extremely painful for her? that was the only real negative side effect?
