Sports Release Form

Wed, 10/14/2009 - 12:10

I'm having a problem getting a medical release form signed for my son, Steven, who wants to participate on his high school swim team.

Steven developed partial seizures (about 1 every two months on average) at age eight and had surgery 18 months ago to remove the Brain lesion that was the cause of the seizures.  Since he had the surgery he has not had a seizure, but we have been unable to find a doctor who is willing to sign a sports release form.  His GP deferred to his neurologist, and his neurologist won't sign because of his history with partial seizures.

Has anyone faced a similar issue?  Were you able to find a soloution, and if so how?  I'm very frustrated because he has gone a year and a half without seizures but they still won't release him to do this activity. I'm also afraid they will also do the same when it comes time to get a driver's license.

Do you really need a sports release form to join the swim team?  I would talk it over with the coach.  It's not like he's going to get hurt in the pool if he had a seizure like he would if he were playing football or baseball.  I swim competitively in triathlons and other open water swims.  Whenever I train in the pool, I just notify the lifeguard that I have epilepsy.  The lifeguard just needs to be trained in seizure procedure in the water.  My neurologist has been totally supportive of my racing since it has never caused me to have a seizure.  Keep working on it.  You could even sell it to the doctor that if your son competes, it would make quite a success story.  My neuro keeps my racing pictures on her wall to show her other patients what they can do if they put their mind to it.  Good luck!!!

I told my doctor about this, and she suggested getting a new doctor.  She has approved all kinds of high school sports including football.  If your doctor hasn't approved it after 18 months, it is highly unlikely that he/she will.
