sleep disorder mis diagnosis

Wed, 10/04/2006 - 23:23
Hi. I'm new to this forum so here goes. My 16 yr old son had been waking from deep sleep and making moaning sounds that woke us up. When we reached him he was unable to talk or move for about 2-3 minutes. He was diagnosed as having sleep paralysis. As time went on the "episodes" started happening more frequently. I am a nurse and these "episodes" did not appear to be post dictal reactions. After attending the prom and after party he was severly sleep deprived and fell out of a chair and stopped breathing and had a grand mal seizure. after a trip to the ER and a cat scan that was abnormal he was set up for an eeg. The "episodes" continued and we wound up at the ER 3 times before the eeg. To make a long story short, we had a 24 eeg and he was diagnosed with juvenille myoclonic epilepsy. We discovered that epilepsy runs on his dads side of the family. He is on Keppra and we havent had any seizures for 3 mnths. Anyone else have a similar story?
