Seizures When Taking Certain Medicines/Drugs

Tue, 05/17/2011 - 08:06

Hi, I just created an account here and I'm going to start of by saying that I think it's great that there is a place for people to talk about epilepsy. Now.. I just turned 16. I had my first seizure in 2009 I believe. All of the seizures I've had have been because of a drug or chemical. I have not had a seizure without taking something, at all. I've had some drug problems since late 08 or early 09.

Tramadol, Xanax, Diphenhydramine (benadryl), Promethazine (prescribed cold medicine), Flexoril, trazadone, and other's I can't quite remember right now.

I've had an MRI, and EEG both of which were normal.

I'm just wondering if it is even possible to determine the problem here,  or if anyone knew.. Thank you.

There are some medicines which can lower the seizure threshold in some users such as Wellbutrin. Looking at medicines/drugs can be quite challenging due to so many ingredients in some drugs. If you want to look at how challenging it can be, there is a book about a FDA approved medicine (Tirend) which contained 1 active ingredient yet a closer look revealed that the medicine actually contained 14 other ingredients too, the majority of ingredients (including some food additives) which were not listed at all on the box and medicine container labels. The educational book is an eye-opener and explains why brand names can differ from generics. The book is the How To (understand) Hyperactivity book (1981) about ADHD by C. Thomas Wild. In some cases, reactions do not show up the same day a person takes a drug. The reaction can show up days, weeks, even months later after using the drug on a daily basis. The How To book contains no cures at all but only insights into the topic.

Thank you for posting, but you didn't quite answer my question. I'm looking for what type of epilepsy- if at all that I have. I only have seizures when taking medications. I have never, NEVER had a seizure without having taken some kind of medicine or drug beforehand.

Example, sometimes I take benadryl. It has caused a seizure once, about a year ago. I have since taken it, and it has not caused a seizure. I know about seizure threshold, and brainwave patterns. Do I just have fluctuating brain waves, that at times, given the circumstances (stress, drugs) can cause seizures? Or do I have some form of epilepsy?

I had a seizure taking wellabutrin ( zyban ) trying to quit smoking . Then another seizure taking flexeril for a few days for my sore back even though I have taken it for years once a day usually only when my back was really bad . I must have been drowsy when I took the back pain medicine that day as I couldn't sleep well due to pain and other issues . I had another seizure taking cipro for a infection or was it the infection that caused the seizure ???? I had a abnormal eeg though even though I had no drugs in my system . I think the drugs just lowered my seizure threshold because I had issues while drinking alcohol making me drowsy or being in a nightclub with flashing lights as now I know I'm photosensitive duh . I take trazadone for sleeping and have taken it for years It causes twitches when I'm super tired as its main side effect is to make you drowsy but I noticed the twitching and jerking only since I started anti seizure medications so I must be extra drowsy then . I think it must be meds that make you drowsy that bring on the seizures especially if your tired already ... prob has something to do with the ingredients in the drugs too. I have taken non drowsy claritin for allergies oh god it made me feel so weird and drugged feeling even thou it shouldn't ... I found benadryl easier to take as long as I only take one so I'm not tired and I take it close to bed time now if my eyes are itchy an nose is plugged up from allergies .
