Seizures and amusement parks????

Mon, 07/31/2006 - 20:24
My daughter is 8 years old, and has had Epilepsy for about 4 years now. She doesn't have frequent seizures (about 1 every other month) but they are severe when she has them and require medical assistance to stop. (status epilepticus) My question is this: We are planning a trip to our local amusement park (Geauga Lake) and am curious to know if anyone else has heard anything regarding the risk of seizure while riding rides such as those that spin, and roller coasters. She has been begging for the last three years to go on the big rides, and I've been scared. She is super psyched about going on roller coasters this year since she's big enough now, but again, I fear what may happen. I haven't been able to find any links related to this online. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!! Cindy

The article is a good one - but also just wanted to share with you that i recently took my 10yr old son to the fair - he has frontal lobe epilepsy - and succumbed to his pleads of riding some of the spinning rides - it was not a good thing - we ended up leaving early because it really threw him off balance and he became very withdrawn afterward - I know how you feel and its very hard when all you want is for your child to be able to be like everyone else and do what all the other kids get to do...sometimes they just cant though. Sincerely, jack's mom

It could be worse. Just joined the group and this topic definately caught my eye. My 10year old son was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 3. After many tries with the amusement parks, trying not to make him miss out on things that we felt children should experience, like all of the rides that he was really excited to ride. We have found that they definately trigger. Being hot and sweating also seems to be a trigger for him, which tends to go hand in hand at amusement parks. It seems to be much easier to just take him to waterparks. I can say that he, so far has been able to WALK out of them on his own 2 feet
