Results from Video EEG

Hi! My 12 y daughter was dx with epilepsy in Aug. She has had 4 gran mal seizures with 5-6 daily small siezures (twitches). She had a video EEG on 12/26. The results came in last Friday. She is at high risk to have seizures. The doctor changed her medicine to depakote from topamax. I have noticed that the twitches have somewhat slowed down. She has not had a gran mal seizure since 11/28. I am hoping this medicine will help. She also has ADHD, which she stated that they are related. She is on concerta for her ADHD. She has not been back to school since the change. She is in the 5th grade. Her grades are okay. I think she is having problems. She has been dx with a learning disablity, but I think she needs more aid. The hospital it going to set up some testing within the next month or so. She seems to forget things, and I feel she isn't leaning what she should. The doctor feels that she maybe learning slowly because of the seizures. My question is: Does anyone have simular problems? Any advice you could give would be grateful. Thanks! Mindy

My duaghter had her first complex partial in january 06 just days after her 11th birthday. After that the frequency and severity of her seizures kept increasing and changng to include to secondary generalised seizures and simple partials. We noticed then a significant deline in her general 'alertness' , as well as moods and confidence. The good news is that in the last three months as we have been working through medication options that have significantly reduced the frequency of her seizures, her grades, ability to concentrate and quickness of mind has really improved, as well as her moods and confidence. At the moment we are on a bit of a down as we are yet again changing medication, but I am sure that the frequency of her seizures really were contributing to her ability to learn, and that she was having far more smnall seizures than we realised. So yes, your doctor could very well be right. I am not sure what tests you refer to but you might be interested in this link for neuropsychological testing whic looks at how the brain is working in terms of memory, speech etc - http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/specialists_neuropsychologists.html cheers

Hi Mindy, My daughter at 14 began having seizures last June. I believe they are homonally triggered. An MRI shows heterotopic gray matter. She also has had learning challenges, and a speech delay, but there were no medical issues prior to the seizure last year. I have quite hopeful that the GARD diet I have found will lower her suceptibility to seizures. You might consider this as well as your daughter is also within the age range where this might make a difference. I didn't realize how many estrogen rich foods there are. I actually was told my daughters were psychogenic. I am sure that is why she had a 5 min tonic clonic in algebra class. I chart her seizures and I can almost predict when they will occur. This diet also has been known to help with ADHD. But you must be strict. Robin
