Petit Mal Epilepsy

Mon, 06/05/2006 - 11:19
Hi there i am now 16, and i have had petit mal epilepsy for 11 nearly 12 years. i find it quite hard to cope with especially the fact i wont be able to start driving in 4 months and many of my friends will. I dont really know how and why i got epilepsy but i have heard that if you have a high IQ it is more likely to affect you. is that true? Also if i want to try alternative treatments such as omega 3 tablets should i still take the medication i am on. I am currently taking Eplim and Ethosuximide which equals out as 7 tablets twice a day. so i was hoping to try and come off it because it is not working. Does anybody no any other forms of treatment that help such as acupuncture and if they do which are better for petit mal? please write back asap im getting desperate

Hi, I'm on the same thing. Petit Mal and taking ethosuximide only its not a bad case. Its so annoying when all of my friends chat about driving. I haven't heard the IQ thing but i've heard tht it means that you take more of your surroundings in which is why when there is too much stimulation you can have problems.

Hi Becki020

I have had a tough two years myself. I went through soooo... many inacurate diagnosis' I was more convinced than my doctor that I was going crazy!! They said I was Bi-Polar and Borderline personality disorder blah blah....!!! It turns out that after one Grand-mal seizure I am a Petit Mal girl myself!

I am lucky to have had that seizure because it made all of my troubles clear. I have epilepsy!!! YAY!!

What works for me is TOPAMAX 250mg and a low dose of anti depressants CYMBALTA. All of that acting out that lead to Bi-Polar symptoms was the result of the total lack of sleep I was getting due to seizing in my sleep. TOPAMAX has very low side affect and can help with weight loss!!! I lost about ten pounds. When I first started I had some mild numbness in my hands and feet but that all went away after the first six weeks.

You have to start out slow and build up to your best dose but I have to say it is the best drug I have taken yet!!

Good Luck and don't give up!!
