Fri, 04/14/2017 - 20:29
My son 7 year old had only one seizure in January while asleep. He has abnormal awake eeg and abnormal 24 hr eeg. Normal MRI. No other activity although I don't know if he is having anymore in his sleep it was only by accident that I witnessed the one. Neuro is telling me they put kids on keppra now after only one seizure and having abnormal scans. Anyone else in similar situation? I really don't want to put him on it thank you

I understand what you are

I understand what you are saying and wanting. No meds if he doesn't have epilepsy. One seizure could be a one time event/ Yes that is what a lot of people look at. However the tests are showing what neurologists know and need to see.The MRI shows the brain as it is Normal ones have nothing on them and everything grew right. The EEG's abnormalities both of them did. What starts a seizure is an electrical impulse hitting wrong in the brain which causes a chain reaction. Those abnormalities are electrical impulses hitting wrong.Keppra  is the best seizure medication I have ever used. It not only reduced the number of seizures I was having. It also shortened the time in those seizures.

seizure plus abnormal EEGs

seizure plus abnormal EEGs likely means it's just a matter of time until more seizures.  so ask what the impact of no treatment could be on school, social/emotional and such (there are a lot of negatives to continuing seizures). sometimes the abnormal activity is it's own problem. ask if he's at a higher risk for SUDEP, which might sound  extreme but can happen to kids. docs don't mention all negative factors they know about when discussing meds with parents. get a second opinion before you completely discount drug treatment.understand the type(s) of seizures he has.keppra isn't the only choice, some people do very well on it. we chose a different drug to start (minor temporary side effects, huge improvement), tried keppra later on as an add on (it reduced remaining seizures quite a bit but was horrible for our child). you can't know your child's response without trying it but stopping seizures is worth it looking for a drug that works well with minor side effects.

Why you don't want to give

Why you don't want to give your child his prescription? He has had two abnormal tests and already has seizures. Denial doesn't cure Epilepsy.
