Lamictal Issues

Sun, 02/12/2006 - 13:53
Hello All: My 14 year old daughter has been taking Lamictal for nearly two years now. Her present dose is 600 mgs of Lamictal daily plus 500 mgs of Zarontin and 20 mgs Prozac. As her seizures change with time we increase her dose in hopes of abating breakthrough seizures. I am noticing with each increase, her skin breaks out- generally around the scalp, mouth and nose area. It is red, scaly and sensitive to touch. It reminds me of the rash she developed when she first began taking Lamictal; less acne -like and more rash -like in appearance. During the first reaction, her neuro. stopped the med for a month, then titrated up slowly until we reached a steady dose. I have read about Stevens-Johnson syndrome and am aware of its severity, but I always thought it was truncular in presentation. Have any of you experienced this type of reaction? In addition, my daughter sleeps constantly and her pupils are quite large for most of the day. I have reported these symptoms to her neuro's nurse, but she does not seem overly concerned. We have an appointment next month, but I am considering taking her to a dermatologist to have this issue checked. Your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bluewater Mom.

Hi Bluewater Mom, I personally have not experienced it, but I have been on lamictal. I would push to have the appointment earlier. Lamictal can cause a rash, and is very dangerous. She is also on other meds. It could be either of them. Take care Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/

Definately push the neuro. appointment. When my daughter started on Lamictal it was very gradual, our doc said the rash could be very dangerous! In my prayers!!

Hello! A good place to read is: http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/medicine_sideeffects.html About halfway down the page you will see info on skin rashes. It states more info than the dangerous type of rash. Hope this helps! Another good place to read, that may help answer other questions or concerns is: http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/research_articles.html -Spiz
