Keppra Side Effect Questions

Mon, 10/26/2015 - 23:27

Hi there!

I'm a sixteen year old girl with JME. About a month ago my doctor added 500 mg of Keppra to my medication list, (which includes 750mg of depakote daily, 50 mg of  lamotrigine twice a day, and 25 mg of folic acid).

It was alright I think until he pushed the Keppra to 750 mg. I'm a junior in high school, and last year as a sophomore I performed well and was able to balance all of my homework and grades even on top of a very busy marching band schedule.

I'm no longer in marching band and my schedule this semester is pretty easy, so one would assume I would be doing well. But no. Ever since starting the higher dose of Keppra I've become lethargic, VERY irritable, EXTREMELY stressed, and kind of just downright weird. I don't like it.

Is anyone else on Keppra having these problems? I'm aware that anxiety, lethargy and irritability are common side effects, and I'm unwilling to go off the medicine because it has improved my condition a bit.

So my question stands as thus: does anyone have any recommendations (ie exercise, diet, weird-gypsy-herbs) that help improve these side effects until my body can adjust to the chemicals flooding it?

I was taking keppra and Lamictal and doctor continually increased in high school. I. Was new to this and had no knowledge, he never did bloodwork either! Make sure you have blood work for levels of the medicines. The keppra did not help me and made me lazy, lose focus, and lose memory. The new doctor switched me to Topirimate and decreased Lamictal. Seizures almost stopped. Also had brain surgery and seizures decreased in length of time and severity.
