inconitnence and absence seizure in 5 yr old son

Thu, 05/05/2011 - 02:54

My five year old son was recently diagnosed with absence epilepsy.  We sort of stumbled upon this discovery because he was having regualr "accidents" after being potty trained successfully for two years prior.  We now know that when he seizes he loses control and urinates until the seizure ends and then he can stop it.  When I asked the ped neuro about it he just said "Hmmm, that's interesting" after which he referred me to the urologist.  Has anyone else suffered with this problem.  Whenever I try to research the two topics together the only thing I find is that they both are considered symptoms of brain tumors, however my son was diagnosed with absence after an EEG was performed...wouldn't a tumor have showed up on that?  Should I ask for an MRI?

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your son, I was diagnosed with Abscence seizures when I was 8 years old now im 21 this year and they are still not controlled despite two types of medication.

I've had a EEG and I dont think it picks up braintumours it looks at brainwaves, And what the doctors were proberly looking at was to see how many fits he was talking, what his brainwaves looked like when he was in a abscence. They should of discussed this all with you. Two years ago I had a MRI due to macropsia which I've been having for about 5 years now and they were looking for a tumour, MRI scans show your insides and they should detect a tumour. My macropsia is just down due to my Epilepsy and its very common for people with abscence seizures to get that in later life.  If you feel really concerned for your sons saftey and doctors arent giving you much information, Ask for a MRI but there is a long waiting list for it though.

My abscence seizures, I never urinated but I used to take between 50-100 a day now its 3 a month. I can walk, talk and write while in one but im not aware of it, But abscence seizures are linked to tumours but it is one of the most common types of Epilepsy and it can be inheritied so if someone in your family history had it it could of been past on, I shouldnt worry about it if the doctors say he hasnt got a tumour.

Abscence seizures usually just accour in childhood and disappear by adult hood but Ive not grown out of mine.

If you want to know anything more about Abscence seizures, I'll tell you my experiences if you like after all I've been living with them for 12 years now.

I hope all the best for you and your son xx

I have a 24 year old daughter with various types of seizures and she has absence problems. In fact thats often how I even know she had a seizure. I see that basically she looses all tone, kinda just lets everything go during the seizure. I hear this is common. I would be very concerned if my neurologist acted like it was a strange problem because it is far from that. Some people vomit with seizures, some even have bowel movements so believe me, it could be worse. By the way we use depends underwear and a pad because it happens every day at least 1-2 times so we are always prepared.

Hi,

Ihave a 12 yr. girl who has been having wetting accidents during the daytime. This just started about 6 months ago. She hAs Fetal Valpoate Syndrome and we have been trying to see if their was a link. She also has Autism, tourettes, OCD, and developmentaql delays. However, we haven't had these kind of problems before.

At one time she was diagnosised with sezues and has has many abnormal EEgs. But, it was decided that she had tics instead. We are also going to a pediatric neurologist. She can have the accidents every other day and not have any for a week than have 2 in one day. What is really bad about it is if it happens at school. We are trying to schedule the times she tries to go.

This is something we will need to look into.

Thanks

Diana
