How do I know??????

Tue, 12/12/2006 - 12:02
My son is 4 and was just diagnosed 6 months ago with Rolandic Epilepsy with 2 EEGs. Basically, he will stare, get numb on his lips, and sometimes drool. He has been on several meds. My question is... he smiles during these episodes and hides his face. Usually it is pretty clear that he is having a seizure, but what's up with the smiling?????? Is he faking it? Is he embarassed? Does this sound familiar to anyone???I am thinking the smiling is part of the weird feeling he gets in his mouth. But when I think of seizures, these symptoms just seem so weird to me. Please let me know if anyone knows anything about these symptoms. Mia

I have an 8 year old with severe refractory epilepsy and I can definately relate.... she has been known to do the weird smile thing from time to time. It is my understanding that it depends on the path that the abnormal firing takes in the brain as to how it will manifest itself. The main thing that you can do is to keep a record of symptoms and look for a consistency. My daughter has been known to do some very odd things and I still don't fully know what I am seeing. However Knowledge is power , so I fully encourage you to do lots of research. Good Luck - Becky

Thank you so much. This is my first time on-line. It feels good to know we aren't the only ones seeing something like this. Mia
