Hi I'm New!

Hi everyone! I'm meowpuppy and i am new to this site. I have a seven-year old son who has epilepsy. He takes one teaspoon of Trileptal twice daily. This controls his seizures totally. We have noticed, however, that the medication seems to cause him to be clumsy, slow, and kind of, well, mentally challenged at school. It takes forever to complete the most basic homework assignment. We must explain things over and over again. Don't get me wrong, i am so blessed that his seizures have stopped, but i wonder if there might be a medication which can stop the seizures without causing such a mental drain. His neurologist says that 2 teaspoons a day should not cause this trouble but i know this is a different child then the intelligent boy i first sent off to school. Does anyone have any info on this phenomenon?

Hello, I don't know a lot about children with epilepsy but My boyfriend took Fenabarb (fenabarbitol) when he was younger and he doesn't have seizures any more. He was off that medicine by age 13.

Hi Meowpuppy, You have just described my 8 yr old son. I completely understand!! My son is on depakote & lamictol. My Nuro said the samething regarding the meds. I had my son tested at medical university and they couldnt diagnose him because of the meds he was taking. They otherwise would have diagnosed MR. Which is not the case I am sorry I have not yet found out the phenomenon. But I can say I have talked to a few people here on this site and it isnt uncommon for kids who suffer from epilepsy to have those symptoms. This site has really helped me. Its helpful to talk to other parents who are going through the same things. Feel free to email me..(click on DM below.) Take care and good luck in finding the info you are looking for. MOM of DM
