Frustrated with daughter's doctor in Atlanta

Tue, 09/19/2006 - 07:25
Hi, I am so frustrated with my daughter's doctor right now. She is 8 y.o. and has had an abnormal EEG, one of her seizures was caught on video tape, which the doctor saw. He has previously told us that she had epilepsy, and did not feel she would out grow it. He has put her on 2 different medicines which have made her worse. Her auras are sudden dizziness, headache and throat pain. These have always been her auras, and the number of them have magnified. Occasionally I have seen eye fluttering with it. She is wiped out afterwards, anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes. We were told they were simple partials. Yesturday, we had an appointment with him, and it is as if we never have seen him before. I had to tell HIM what the previous EEG said, that her MRI was normal, and that her blood work came back therapeutic levels. He procedes to tell me that he thinks my daughter is not really having seizures and that he wants her evaluated by a psychiatrist. He proceedes to tell me that she is over exaggerating, and may not really be having any problems. I was SO MAD!!! WHY THEN DID HE PUT HER ON AEDs THAT HAVE MADE HER WORSE!!!!!!!!. I could not even complete an entire sentence yesturday. He was not listening at all. We are so changing doctors!!!! There is no way that an 8 year old can "fake" this, much less fake the huge seizure that was caught on video. The only bright side is that she is having a video EEG next week. Am I right that these can all be signs of simple partials???? Does any one in the Atlanta area have a good pediatric neuro, or epileptologist? I am in desperate need of a recommendation. As big as Atlanta is, there seems to only be this one group to go to, Child Neurologist of Atlanta. I am not happy with this doctor that is in this group, but there may be another one that is in this same group that is better. Please give me Info. Sorry for the double post, I am not sure what happened. Thanks, Lori

First, ((big hug))! I have no clue about pediatric neuro's in your area. I do know what it feels like to go to your doctor and have it seem like he's never seen or spoken to you before. It is incredibly frustrating. I try to remind myself that they have hundreds of patients, but then again, they have my file and can remind themself of my situation. I think the moment they turn around AFTER starting treatment and say "It's all fake", that is the moment you turn on your heel and say "so are you!" I cannot imagine what sort of doctor would do that, but I would look into malpractice issues. AED's are not candy. You can't just play around with them. They can seriously screw you up if you don't have seizures. Also, I am pretty sure he can't turn around and say all the seizures are fake if her eeg has reported epileptiform activity. If there is abnormal activity, clearly SOMETHING is happening. I mean, come on, I'm not a doctor and even I know that. I would request a copy of all her records (don't let them say you can't have them, you do have a right to keep them), check out the "find a specialist" area of this website, and get a new doctor. You are paying for this. You deserve to get your money's worth.
