"Episodes"?

Tue, 03/10/2015 - 12:28

My son was diagnosed with benign rolandic epilepsy in July. We didn't medicate him right away. He had another small one in October and another big one in December, after which we medicated. He hasn't had any since. However, he has these episodes of feeling "weird". He has a hard time describing it, but basically he feels hot, like he's about to sweat. His throat feels "funny". He sometimes gets dizzy. He feels confused. Today he got a headache. He started these in October. He had about 6 of them in the week leading up to his second seizure. He had 4 in the day before his seizure in December. It almost seems like these are a warning sign before a seizure. I talked to the doc about this and we had a 3 day EEG. The results were that SOMETIMES this feeling coincides with a dip in brain waves. The other times, there was no change on his EEG. They actually changed his diagnosis, though. He now has focal seizures with a tendency to generalize because they found no rolandic spikes in 3 days of EEG.

I guess what I'm asking is: should I be concerned with these episodes? The doctor says no, but I KNEW he was going to have that seizure in December because of these episodes. It's so hard to get him to describe them and I don't know if it's a problem or if it's as simple as he got a head rush or something from standing up too fast! Argh! They usually pass in a couple of minutes, but today he spent an hour in the nurse's office before she had me pick him up. I don't think he's faking or playing it up because he loves school and didn't want to come home. He's totally fine now.

Welcome to the club They actually changed his diagnosis He now has focal seizures with a tendency to generalize. OK When I was doagnosed there werent types of epilepsy or types of seizures. But then that was close to the stone age and many things have changed. My diagnosis was Grand Mal, Petite Mal and Focal Motor epilepsy. Tonic clonic=grand mal. absence seizures= petite mal.focal seizures can land in several areas. A focal seizure starts in one area of the brain and if it stays there fine. With mine it started with my right hand feeling wierd and I couldn't move it for a few seconds or up to a minute. They can look like a person is in a day dream. In mine I know what was happeing. If the teacher had asked me a question and I didn't answer him quickle enough he went to the next student. Well I might have been in a seizure and my answer at times came out before the other student got started answering it. I had been written up for day dreaming in class. Those day dreams were focal or absence seizures. When a focal seizure generalizes it isn't just in that 1 area of the brain. It have moved and staretd covering the entire brain. Those seizures can look like several other seizures you might want to read about generalized seizures. Those fully or wierd and funny feelings could have been auras. which are seizures unto themselves. For some people they are warnings of  a larger seizure going to happen. But with me they were just wierd or funny feelings. I had auras from time to time but I didn't necessarily have a seizure. Now you posted you started his medications in dec sometime. You posted he had a 3 day EEG and his diagnosis was changed. When did his dosage get changed or has it??? Thre iss a reason for that question. It takes 4-6 weeks for the body to ge used to the medication and the theraputic levels to build up. A neurologist will generally want another appt about 3-4 months after the patient staretd using the medication. In that visit he will ask questions "Has he had seizures? Are the seizures he had fewer then before he staretd taking the medications? Those questions are to determine if the dosage needs to be increased or decreased. If he has fewer seizures but still has some then the theraputic level or dosage may need to be increased. It is a trial and error work but they can and do get things right. If yo uhave a good relationship with the neurologist you can get many answers in a phone call.I am the one with epilepsy. However I do knnow that Mom went batty at times. Most mothers do. You have this forum and you will get responses to your post. Hey my mother didn't but like I posted it was a long time ago. We hadn't gotten to the moon yet.  I hope this helps and he gets the assistance he needs. If he loves school he is on my side. I hated it when the nurse kept me in the office. Joe
