Depakote ER

Mon, 03/27/2006 - 13:05
My son was 8 when he had a seizure. He was in computer class at the time that it happened. He was seen at Children's Hospital and they found no reason for why this happen and told me to schedule an EEG and f/u with a neurologist. He went for his EEG, which was very abnormal. Due to the severe abnormalities, he was prescribed Depakote ER. They told me his seziures were induced by light i.e. strobe light. Anyway, he has not had a seizure since, but he gained a considerable amount of weight and now his hair seems to be falling out. In addition to the physical apperance, he has been having a lot of behavioral problems with his siblings. His teacher at school has not noticed any problems, but me and my husband are unable to control him.

Hi Barbara, My son is 7 and newly diagnosed w/ E (tonic clonic and complex partial) and was prescribed 250mg Depakote today. I'm wondering if the side effects have abated any since your posting? Was your son active before being put on the Depakote? Mine only is when I kick him out of the gameroom :) He's thin now, but when I was on Depakote about 8+ years ago I gained quite a bit of weight as well and remember being very tired. I wish you the best of luck and if you can offer any advice I'll happily take it :)
