Changing Med's for my 3 year old son

Sat, 03/06/2010 - 08:57

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any advice? My 3 year old son was taking Keppra for about 10 months, and he was doign great, however, the past 3 weeks have been very hard. He's had 3 seizures every week, for a total of 9. Our nuerologists, told us to add Topamax, which we did for the first time last night around 8PM. He then had a seizure at 2:30 am. This morning we gave him his 25mg dose of Topamax, along with Keppra, as prescribed by his doctor, about half hour later he had another seizure.

We seem to think that the meds are causing the seizures? I guess we just feel helpless, and continue to look for answers.  I was hoping that by my son taking topamax as well a keppra, that his seizures would stop. However, they have not. granted it has only been about a day since we started the little guy on topamax.

If anyone has any suggestions on comments, particularly in regards to how long does topamax take to start working?

Thank you all and God bless.

I think that it can take up to a week to see results when starting a med or changing a dose.

My son was dianosed the first of February. Absence seizures. They started him on Keppra. So far it has not worked. They keep uping the dosage. He seems to be getting worse. Plus he has the side effects of the meds. The doctor said if this last dosage doesnt work we will change medicine. I am considering taking him completely off everything. that might sound crazy, but the meds seem to have to many side effects. How many people get better from taking all these medications? I am going to look into other options. My doctor wouldn't ever discuss diet or anything. Just give them medication. It is so confusing. I have know idea what to do. Good luck!!

My son was on Topamax, and I am not a big fan of it... He was like a zombie, he was just here. He didn't play much, made no sounds, pretty much just existed. We have weaned him off the Topamax and you could not ask for a difference in a child.. He is playing with his baby brother, walking, making sounds, and interacting with different things now... Just becareful with Topamax

Hope this helped a little,
