atonic seassures?! help please

Tue, 04/23/2013 - 02:28
Hi!
I have a son who is 3 years 3 months old, about two months ago when having temperature around 38,5 C he fell on the floor after sneezing, he sneezed and fell to the front, he was straight, like a "wooden board", he didn't colapse like he is fainting but he didn't use hands to protect himself...and he was conscious the whole time, it lasted only a second and he was fine afterwords...I thought he lost his balance because of the sneezing and temperature...but two weeks ago, it happened again, he was sitting down (in the kindergarten) and he fell forward to his forehead, he was conscious and even answered a kindergarten teacher's questions a second before...it lasted a second or two again and he was conscious, he also had temperature around 38 c.
We went to see neuropediatrician yesterday, she wants us to do EEG, she thinks it's a atonic seissure. I read about those seissures and saw some you tube videos, it doesn't look like that to me, he didn't colapse to the floor like he became limb...His father (35) has type 1 diabetes since he was 15.

I read that seassures can have conection with diabetes too. Though he has no diabetes
symptomes...
Sorry for my grammar mistakes, I live in Croatia/Europe
Thanks a lot.

I am sorry about all of this, I know it is quite scary. Please know that seizure manifest themselves if different ways and they also can change. it does sound like an atonic seizure, sometimes known as a "drop seizure" where simply "the knees buckle" for a second and there is no loss of consciousnesses, they simply fall for a second and then they pick up and go with no troubles. Sometimes there is the stiffened of the limbs, also another way to seize. My son gets so stiff like a board, it is very scary. He started with the drop seizures, I though he was tired or sleepy or trip on something. Now I know what that was. The EEG is a great diagnostic tool. That is the onlt way to know. Your grammar is fine! Good luck

thanks a lot for your answer, after eeg we will probably do ctg or MR, is there any possibility thet these are febril convulsiond because they occured while he had a fever? Do they happen to your son when he has fever?

I'm sorry your son has this. How old is he? How often does it happen?

My sons Ct scans (2) were normal, all labs normal. It is my understanding that children febrile seizures occur under very ihigh fever, but if there is a second unprovoked episode, the reason may not be the fever. People with epilepsy may also get episodes when they have a fever as well as it is one of the triggers. My son's just got diagnosed two months ago, he is 15 years of age. When he was little, he always had ear infections and was slightly developmentally delayed, but he got rigth ion target by elementary school. He Never had any problems until this past January when he fell on the shower one morning (drop seizure, he got up just fine and I asked him what was going on, he says I fell. Then he drops his glasses and I noticed his hands shaking, all of these while being up and talking. When to the ER and they said it was nothing. 7 weeks later in the morning his hands start shaking again, then his legs, then he had a seizure that lasted 1-2 minutes. First EEG came back normal. Second EEG came back abnormal and he was diagnosed with JME (juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. His trigger was sleep deprivation, come to found out he was sneaking out of his room to play video games until late at night grr!!!!!! he is on a very low dose of Keppra and so far so good, it was been two months and he has had no other episodes, but now bed time is strictly enforced and we have modified the diet so he can have more protein and fat, I have him on fish oil pills and a multivitatimin. It has only happen twice in his life time as described above, no fever; however, i remember when he was 8, 10 and 13 looking back, he had very brief "fainting spells" when he was tired and standing for a long time and he would just collapse and then keep on going. I am unsure if those were drop seizures or not, but I am pretty sure that they were. I hope all is well. Good luck
